In addition to green fairways and evergreen trees, Holmes Harbor is dedicated to "green" practices. Here are a few environmentally-friendly practices at Holmes Harbor Golf and Beach Club:
Golf Course
♦ The golf course features drought-tolerant landscaping
♦ Proper receptacles for recycling cans and bottles are conveniently placed throughout the course
♦ Effluent (recycled water) is used to water the golf course
♦ Organic fertilizers are used on golf course
♦ Increases the organic content and consequently the water-holding capacity of the soil
♦ Improves the physical structure of the soil which allows more air to get to plant roots
♦ Increases bacterial and fungal activity in the soil, which make other nutrients more available to plants
♦ Organically derived plant nutrients are slow to leach from the soil, making them less likely to contribute to water pollution
Beachfire Grill
♦ The culinary team wears black jackets and aprons and the dining room uses black napkins to eliminate the use of bleach
♦ Biodegradable paper products are used wherever possible; these products are produced using corn
♦ Low-voltage lighting that uses compact fluorescent lights has been installed, greatly reducing the amount of energy used each day
♦ Tap water is now provided upon request, reducing the amount of water used and the amount of waste water produced
♦ A complete line of green cleaning products are used including basic cleaning supplies
♦ An energy savings program has been implemented by strictly turning off all unused lights in the building—this mainly affects office and storage areas, but lights are turned off when they are not in use—even for a short period of time
♦ All paper and cardboard products are recycled
♦ The club house is outfitted with a high-efficiency HVAC unit
The Homes
♦ The Bluffs are the first Built Green™ certified construction in Island County
♦ Built Green homes are designed to provide homeowners with comfortable, durable, environmentally friendly homes that are cost-effective to own and operate
♦ These resource-efficient homes are crafted to exceed building codes and provide homeowners with years of healthy, quality living

♦ Use of renewable/recycled materials
♦ Clean water and water conservation
♦ Low-emitting materials
♦ Energy efficiency
♦ Built Green certification
